Just the ticket for us kids of the 21st century, March 21, 2012 By Patches N. Stitches (Raymond, MS) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: JVC KD-X40 In-Dash Car Stereo Digital Media Receiver w/ Front USB, iPod Control and Variable Color Control (Electronics) This is an excellent headunit for those of us who threw out all our CD's when the first MP3 players came along. If you're also ultra-modern like me and text rather than place phone calls, you don't need the more expensive JVC KD-X50BT which has an included Bluetooth adapter. This radio is ultra light (thanks to the omission of a CD-player) and has just what you need to listen to your favorite tunes on flash drive. The Variable Color feature is great for matching the color of your interior's dash lighting and controls; it replicated my Corvette's tangerine perfectly. It has 4 pre-amp outputs for speakers that need them (such as Bose with built-in amps) or a set of subs. I only have two minor complaints with this radio. It can only see the first 255 songs in a folder, but I blame that on myself (I should really organize my music better). Also, the controls aren't quite as intuitive as other radios I've used, but that just means you need to read the manual. I'm not going to deduct any... Read more

- highly customizable display colors
- seems to automatically adjust volume from one song to the next; I like the feature, it might bother others

- seems big considering it doesn't have a CD or cassette mechanism
- tone, balance and fader controls are too deep in the menu; too many clicks; can't safely change settings while driving
- USB port doesn't charge an external device when the unit is powered off
- difficult to remove the stereo; included extraction hooks often slip.
